Blood diamond was a wonderfully written and directed film - a rare gem full of superb performances by pretty much everyone involved. Story was great; they even managed to weave in a prodigal son arc pretty organically, which I recognize and applaud; not to mention lots of really universal and relevant themes - eye opening and well presented. A couple of problems though - character development felt a little sudden and the smuggler-journalist love-line felt forced, including and especially the phone stunt they pulled towards the end - but mainly it's the fact that I had trouble focusing on the story half the time because Jennifer Connelly was in the scene with her perfectly curled Hollywood hair and 1000-watt smile. I'm not saying it's her fault for being a stunner, but you'd think that in a picture like this one they'd at least allow their stars to look lousy when they're supposed to.
