These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
- Proverbs 6:16-19
Among the things that God hates is a proud look - or haughty eyes - as the NIV translates it, which makes sense since the world seems to love a proud look (though considerably less when it ends up being on the receiving end). An upturned nose, a disinterested expression radiating contempt, a posture proclaiming unshakeable superiority - these are things that we've been conditioned to admire because they seem to communicate a sense of confidence - a sign that the wearer is fully aware and confident of who he/she is, whereas in God's eyes, a proud look and haughty eyes suggest someone who doesn't really comprehend or appreciate who He is; the truth of God's greatness and glory, if properly understood and acknowledged, leaves no room for the worship of self.
